Hartmut Haenchen is in Madrid, conducting enthralling performances of Shostakovich’s harrowing opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk. With an outstanding cast led by Eva-Maria Westbroek and Michael König, and directed by Martin Kusej, the production opened last week to great acclaim: "Hartmut Haenchen, what a maestro! His conducting was at the helm of the production, shaping it with a firm hand and with great panache and style!" Performances continue to just before Christmas.
