Wilhelm Backhaus
Schubert: Impromptu in B flat
-
Beethoven: Piano Sonata No.6
Piano Sonata No.29 'Hammerklavier'
Recorded 'live' in the Beethovenhalle in 1959! Well known for his interpretations and recordings of Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms, Wilhelm Backhaus was much admired as a chamber musician. This 1959 concert gives us the rare opportunity to hear Backhaus ‘live’ in the Beethovenhalle in Bonn in a typical programme of Schubert and Beethoven including the mighty Hammerklavier. According to the pianist and Beethoven specialist Stephen Kovacevich, Backhaus was the only pianist to have understood the work.
