“Under Klangforum Wien and Sylvain Cambreling it all slips down like butterscotch.”

Gramophone Magazine (Cerha CD review, Klangforum Wien) - Oct 2011

“In the pit, Cambreling and the Orchestre de L’Opera de Paris were a miracle.”

Le Monde (Saint François d’Assise Opéra Bastille, Paris)

“We have Sylvain Cambreling to thank for the fact that The Makropulos Case has the makings of such a great evening at the Stuttgart Opera House.  From the very first note Cambreling revealed the many deliberately contradictory layers of Janáček's music - the sharp cuts, the changing perspectives - all displayed by the state orchestra, playing on top form.  Making his debut with this orchestra, Cambreling conducted beat for beat, never allowing the musical flow to falter.  He was the star of the evening and the first night audience rightly lavished their cheers on him.”

Neue Musik Zeitung (Janáček The Makropulos Case)

“The champion of modern scores, Sylvain Cambreling, is a conductor with accurate and organically considered gestures.  For his Munich Philharmonic debut the music was foremost at every point and it was clear that Cambreling had prepared sensitively and with impressive thoroughness.  In Henri Dutilleux's Metaboles, Cambreling inspired the orchestra to show a heightened sense of colour, making the subtle weave of the composition suggestively accessible.”

TZ (Janáček The Makropulos Case)

“First and above all, the Munich Philharmonic presented itself in excellent form at a very prestigious concert under Sylvain Cambreling... hardly anyone could resist the shining tone colours of the Philharmonic Orchestra and Cambreling's complex style and diction.”

Süddeutsche Zeitung (Munich Philharmonic)

“The compact, 90-minute score to “Wozzeck,” with its lush orchestral colorings, piercing atonal harmonies and ruminative, aching lyricism, presents formidable challenges, fully met here by the renowned French conductor Sylvain Cambreling, who drew an urgent and inexorable account of the music from the impressive orchestra.”

The New York Times (Wozzeck, Opéra National de Paris)

“On a set of excitingly recorded super audio CDs from Haennsler Classic, conductor Sylvain Cambreling punches home the large-scale moments -- including the most breathtaking "Dies Irae" bass-drum thwacks on record -- but the early-music purity of the choral singing (again, the EuropaChorAkademie) and subtle playing from the fine SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg suggest an even keener engagement with the contemplative side of this music.”

The Washington Post (Verdi's Requiem, Mass Haennsler Classic)

“Sylvain Cambreling... is an interpreter of considerable distinction, and in Berlioz's dramatic symphony he pulls together all the strands of this notoriously hybrid work with great dramatic flair.”

The Guardian (Berlioz's Roméo et Juliette )

In April 2010 Sylvain Cambreling became the Principal Conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra and in September 2012 took up the position of General Music Director of Stuttgart Sate Opera.

French-born conductor Sylvain Cambreling [www.sylvaincambreling.com] is a musician with big ideas.  A thought-provoking, colourful and dramatic artist, he has a flair for grabbing the attention of audiences, yet his originality is rooted in thorough knowledge of musicology.  As the Chief Conductor of the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg, and Principal Guest Conductor of Klangforum Wien, he has offered ample proof of his gifts for imaginative programme-planning and persuasive championship of contemporary music.

Cambreling was Music Director at La Monnaie for ten years before becoming Music Director at Frankfurt Opera in the 1990s.  Productions notable for the introduction of new and often revolutionary ideas include Pelléas et Mélisande and Les Troyens for the Salzburg Festival; Wozzeck, Fidelio and a Ring cycle in Frankfurt.

Sylvain Cambreling has conducted extensively at Opéra National de Paris, where his work has included Saint François d'Assise, Pelléas et Mélisande, Katya Kabanova, La Clemenza di Tito, The Love for Three Oranges, Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro, Simon Boccanegra, Les Troyens, Louise, La Traviata, Ariane et Barbe-Bleue and Wozzeck .

Cambreling balances his opera engagements with his appointments with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Klangforum Wien, and guest appearances in concert with the world’s leading orchestras.  He has performed with orchestras including the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonics, the radio orchestras of Hamburg, Köln, Copenhagen, Stockholm and London, as well as the Philharmonia, BBC Symphony, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Münchner Philharmoniker, Vienna Symphony, Orchestre de Paris and Oslo Philharmonic orchestras.  In North America he has conducted the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony and Orchestre symphonique de Montréal.

A great believer in imaginative programming, Cambreling is famed for the originality of his concert-planning.  A speciality is the juxtaposition of contrasting but related works or composers, for example Haydn and Messiaen, or Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust with Schumann’s Scenes from Goethe's Faus.  Among the boldest of his recent projects is the performance on consecutive evenings of Messiaen’s three largest works – Turangalîla, Éclairs sur l'au-delà and La transfiguration de notre seigneur Jésus-Christ .

In 2009 Sylvain Cambreling received the Echo Klassik Conductor of the Year Award and the Deutsche Schallplatten Jahrespreise 2009 for best orchestral CD and in 2010 the MIDEM Contemporary Music Award for his recording of Messiaen with the SWR Freiburg and Baden-Baden Symphony Orchestra.
